Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

Do o you observe hyperactivity in your Child? Is he unable to control his impulses? Or is he having trouble in paying attention? If the answer is yes, your child might be affected by Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).  A person with ADHD has differences in brain development and brain activity that affect attention, the ability to sit still, and self-control. ADHD can affect a child at school, at home, and in friendships.

Though ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed mental disorder of children, it can affect teens and can continue into adulthood. It’s usually discovered during the early school years, when a child begins to have problems paying attention. Adults with ADHD may have trouble managing time, being organized, setting goals, and holding down a job. They may also have problems in other areas like relationships, self-esteem, and addiction.

Signs of ADHD

The signs & symptoms are grouped into 3 categories:

  1. Inattention- A child with ADHD gets easily distracted, doesn’t follow directions and has difficulties in finishing tasks, makes frequent careless mistakes, doesn’t organizes daily tasks, has problem in sitting still and often loses things. They often seems absent minded & usually tends to forgets about daily tasks.
  2. 2. Hyperactive– A child with ADHD often shifts position, become restless, or bounces when sitting. He doesn’t stay seated & has trouble playing quietly. The child is always moving or running. He can talks excessively & may act in ways that disrupt others.
  3. Impulsive– The Child with ADHD acts without thinking, often can’t wait for his turn. He might interrupt others, push, grab or do things without asking for permission. He might over react in a situation & can shout suddenly.

What are the causes of ADHD


Scientists are not sure what causes ADHD. But few the major causes are: Genes, smoking and consumption of alcohol use during pregnancy, exposure  to high levels of lead & Brain injuries.


How to treat ADHD?


If you find any of the symptoms mentioned above in your child, the first thing should be doing is consulting a Doctor.

Though, many believe ADHD is incurable, but if treated at the right time & under the right supervision, it can be cured. Generally the doctors prescribe pills as a treatment but it does worse than good. Pills are largely ineffective and many might cause few side effects as well.
