Understanding Personality Disorder:

When compared to the average individual, a person with a personality disorder thinks, feels, behaves, and interacts with others quite differently. Based on shared traits and symptoms, three clusters of personality disorder types have been identified. The signs and symptoms of at least one other personality disorder are present in many persons who have just one personality disorder. For a condition to be diagnosed, not all of the mentioned signs and symptoms must be present.

Cluster A Personality Disorders

Cluster A with personality disorders tend to think or act in peculiar or unusual ways. Schizotypal personality disorder, schizoid personality disorder, and paranoid personality disorder are the three types.

Paranoid Personality Disorders
  •  Widespread mistrust and scepticism of people's intentions.

  •  Unfounded fear that someone is out to get you or that they're lying to you.

  •  Unfounded mistrust in someone else's faithfulness or reliability.

  •  A reluctance to provide knowledge because of an unfounded concern that someone else may use it against you.

  •  Perception of unintentional comments or non-threatening circumstances as personal assaults or insults.

  •  Indignation or hostility in response to alleged slights or insults.

  •  Tendency to hold grievances.

  •  Unfounded, persistent worry that a spouse or sexual partner is being unfaithful.

Schizoid Personality Disorder
  •  Lack of interest in interpersonal interactions and a preference for solitude.

  •  Limited emotional expression range.

  •  Being unable to enjoy most activities.

  •  Incapacity to recognise common social signals.

  •  The impression of being uncaring or uninterested in otherse.

  •  Little or no desire to engage in sexual activity with another person.

Schizotypal Personality Disorder
  •  Strange behaviour, thinking, ideas, or mannerisms.

  •  Strange perceptions, like hearing a voice speak your name.

  •  Flat feelings or improper emotional reactions.

  •  Lack of or discomfort with personal connections, as well as social anxiety.

  •  A lack of interest, improper behaviour, or suspicion in others.

  •  "Magical thinking" refers to the notion that you can sway events and others with your ideas.

  •  "The conviction that certain unrelated occurrences or events contain personal, secret messages for you.

Cluster B Personality Disorders

Dramatic, excessively emotional, or unpredictable thought or behaviour is characteristics of cluster B personality disorders. There are several of them, including borderline personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, histrionic personality disorder, and narcissistic personality disorder.

Antisocial Personality Disorders
  •  Disregard for the wants or sentiments of others.

  •  Lying, stealing, using aliases, and deceiving people repeatedly.

  •  Persistent issues with the legislation.

  •  Repeatedly violating another person's rights.

  •  Aggressive and frequently violent actions.

  •  Disregard for one's own or others' safety.

  •  Impulsive actions and Consistently reckless.

  •  Absence of regret for actions.

  •  Impulsive and dangerous actions, such as binge eating or engaging in hazardous sexual activity.

  •  Unstable or brittle self-perception.

  •  Anxious and unstable relationships.

  •  Mood swings, frequently in response to interpersonal stress.

  •  Extreme dread of being abandoned or alone.

  •  Sensations of emptiness that persist.

  •  Frequent, powerful angelic manifestations.

  •  Paranoia brought on by stress that comes and goes.

Histrionic Personality Disorder
  •  Constantly seeking attention.

  •  Excessively emotional, dramatic or sexually provocative to gain attention.

  •  Speaks dramatically with strong opinions, but few facts or details to back them up.

  •  Easily influenced by others.

  •  Shallow, rapidly changing emotions.

  •  Excessive concern with physical appearance.

  •  Thinks relationships with others are closer than they really are.

Narcissistic Personality Disorder
  •  Belief that you're special and more important than others.

  •  Fantasies about power, success and attractiveness.

  •  Failure to recognize others' needs and feelings.

  •  Exaggeration of achievements or talents.

  •  Expectation of constant praise and admiration and Arrogance.

  •  Unreasonable expectations of favors and advantages, often taking advantage of others.

  •  Envy of others or belief that others envy you.

Cluster C Personality Disorders

Cluster C personality disorders are characterized by anxious, fearful thinking or behavior. They include avoidant personality disorder, dependent personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.

Avoidant Personality Disorders
  •  Too sensitive to criticism or rejection.

  •  Feeling inadequate, inferior or unattractive.

  •  Avoidance of work activities that require interpersonal contact.

  •  Socially inhibited, timid and isolated, avoiding new activities or meeting strangers.

  •  Extreme shyness in social situations and personal relationships.

  •  Fear of disapproval, embarrassment or ridicule.

Dependent Personality Disorder
  •  Excessive dependence on others and feeling the need to be taken care of.

  •  Submissive or clingy behavior toward others.

  •  Fear of having to provide self-care or fend for yourself if left alone.

  •  Difficulty starting or doing projects on your own due to lack of self-confidence.

  •  Difficulty disagreeing with others, fearing disapproval.

  •  Tolerance of poor or abusive treatment, even when other options are available.

  •  Urgent need to start a new relationship when a close one has ended.

Obsessive-compulsive Personality Disorder
  •  Preoccupation with details, orderliness and rules.

  •  Extreme perfectionism, resulting in dysfunction and distress when perfection is not achieved, such as feeling unable to finish a project because you don't meet your own strict standards.

  •  Desire to be in control of people, tasks and situations, and inability to delegate tasks.

  •  Neglect of friends and enjoyable activities because of excessive commitment to work or a project.

  •  Inability to discard broken or worthless objects.

  •  Rigid and stubborn.

  •  Inflexible about morality, ethics or values.

  •  Tight, miserly control over budgeting and spending money.

Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder is not the same as obsessive-compulsive disorder, a type of anxiety disorder.

Symptoms of Personality Disorder
  •  Strange or erratic behavior.

  •  Suspicion and distrust.

  •  Taking undesirable risks.

  •  Extreme mood swings and Anger outbursts.

  •  Difficulty with relationships.

  •  Problems at school or work.

  •  Need for instant gratification.

Diagnosis of Personality Disorder
  •  Physical evaluation.

  •  Psychological evaluation.

  •  Psychiatrist consultation.

Prognosis of Personality Disorder

Personality disorders can also increase your risk of:

  •  depression.

  •  anxiety disorders, eating disorders and bipolar disorders.

  •  substance abuse, work and relationship issues.

  •  being in an abusive relationship, as the abused or the abuser.

  •  sexually transmitted infections.

  •  self-injury and suicidal ideation.

  •  getting in a motor vehicle accident.

  •  getting in physical fights.

  •  becoming the victim of violent crimes.

->The condition seems to be worse in young adults and may gradually get better with age.

->Many people with this disorder get better over time with treatment and can learn to live satisfying lives.

->Up to 30% of people who require mental health services have at least one personality disorder characterized by abnormal and non-adaptive inner experience and behavior.
